But it's rock soup now. These kids have grown up on Orbital and White Stripes at once, they're pulp music gourmets of the highest order. The LimeWire and Essential Mix generation consumes music hard and fast. The result is a crash course in what's good.
Franz Ferninand, when I saw them briefly recently at a press conference were of this ilk. They knew so much. Technically they were not excellent, but they were mood mixing geniuses. With the vibe set to "On" they rocked through styles like a meat cleaver through jam. With gusto and relish. And no shortage of showmanship. Suddenly, head down and stock still guitar icons seem self indulgent again.
Rock is dead. Long live rock.
